Any Device: The Panacea of Open Networks

Time: Apr. 01, 2008 from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM
Location: Las Vegas Convention Center − Room: North 113

One of the panacea’s evoked in the calls for open networks is the ability to have any device that technically can attach to the network be allowed to do so. Theoretically, this will enable a whole new class of devices without any voice capability to utilize wireless networks. This discussion with consumer electronics manufacturers and others will look at the types of devices beyond voice handsets that will be enabled by this new paradigm, what the associated services might look like, and how soon, and in what numbers, manufacturers might be providing them.

This session will look for solutions to address the cost and reliability issues caused by Backhaul, including satellite, terrestrial microwave, fiberless optics and incremental growth of T1s, as well as address the question of whether or not fiber to the individual cell site is the only option, and if so, how it can be made cost effective.

Location: Las Vegas Convention Center − Room: North 115

A growing number of companies are stepping forward to offer consumers a host of applications for wireless handsets. Many believe applications should not be dictated by service plan, but made available to customers through software instead. What are the likely technological and service implications across the ecosystem as applications become more prevalent via software and not through the services contract? This panel will address these questions and more as it confronts the issue of Software as Services.

Marketers seek simple solutions to allow them to interact with consumers in all aspects of their advertising and promotion. History has shown that the most successful "campaigns" enable a two-way conversation or interaction between consumers and brands. Interwoven in this discussion is the unique tie of mobile to leverage other forms of traditional media, the prospect of using consumer generated information for better targeting and relevancy, and the overall improvement of the marketing message and adoption of a brand.

Will the Mobile Internet See the Creation of New, Billion-Dollar Startups?

Time: Apr. 02, 2008 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM
Location: Las Vegas Convention Center − Room: North 119

Each media-print, radio, television, cable, and Internet-has witnessed the creation of new billion dollar companies. Will the advent of mobile Internet see a similar phenomenon of new mega-media properties? Is mobile fundamentally different enough for startups to innovate and differentiate? Is the ecosystem fluid enough for new sites, content, and apps to gain users and usage? Or, are the Internet incumbents, from MSN and Google, to Amazon and eBay, fundamentally advantaged in mobile Internet? And, how are carriers affected by the answers to this debate? In this session, carriers, media incumbents, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs will debate whether startups have a chance to win in the emerging mobile Internet.
